"Lots of bright lips were on the runway recently and as a makeup artist I'm always excited to see color on faces. We've all gotten so used to the ease of glosses and sheer lipsticks, but there's something exhilarating about painting on a proper lip. You feel different, more pulled together and polished. And the shot of neon in these lipsticks makes you feel simultaneously playful and chic.
A few tips:
Keep the rest of your face simple and understated when you wear a really bright lip. Ease up on the shadow, and focus more on great skin, perfect flirty lashes, a little eyeliner, and the right bright for you. Some bright pinks can make your teeth look yellow, the opposite of a red lipstick which appears to whiten the teeth. Make Up For Ever makes an amazing true bright pink (#203). If you don't have a coffee or red wine habit then go for it, but a color like that can make teeth look a little less than pearly white. If that's the case, then try an intense bright rosy pink, like Rouge Dior Replenishing Lipcolor: 880 Devilish Pink. The color is incredibly flattering on so many different skin tones and has a lovely semi matte finish. Truly glamorous. If that version of rosy pink still doesn't have the pop you're looking for, MAC Lipstick in Girl About Town, is a similar color that turns up the intensity a notch. It still has the flattering undertones that work on lots of people.
Generally, people with olive skin look fantastic in a bright orange/red lip and NARS makes a matte lip pencil - NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Red Square, which is the perfect orange/red. But I encourage even the fairest skinned to give it a go. I think it's a great transitional color for spring and looks really fresh with just a little bronzer (even the palest skin can find a subtle bronzer) and mascara. If that is too much of a commitment for you, Tarte makes a heavily tinted lip balm called Tarte 24/7 Lip Sheer: Monday, it's a lovely tomato-red and maintains the intensity in color, but goes on more sheer...Same effect, less commitment.
Don't bother with lip liner. You don't want it to look clownish. If you have lovely lips then try softening the edges just a bit with a Q-Tip or a clean lipbrush so the color doesn't have a hard edge. Really, it's best not to line at all with these colors but if you must.... say you have smaller lips and can't live without lipliner, try a really neutral lipliner only a touch darker than your natural lip color (or a shade lighter than the color you're using), just so you can get the shape down. Make sure there's no visible lipline.
After you've done your face and painted on that new neon bright lipstick, take another quick look in the mirror and see if you need to add or remove anything. You might need to adjust your blush or take down the powder a bit. You could look overdone or underdone, depending on your normal makeup habits, so just take a quick critical peak and tweak it either way. And then remember this last bit of advice.....
When you rock a more daring look, you have to own it. Your confidence will turn heads more than the lipcolor you're wearing."
