Have You Tried The Aspirin Mask?

Have You Tried The Asprin Mask?

We stumbled upon an ongoing blog discussion of Aspirin facials and we are dying to know, “Have you tried this home remedy? Did you experience any mini miracles?”

Evidently Aspirin is a beta-hydroxy acid or BHA, a very effective type of salicylic acid known to be an amazing pore cleanser, said to get the kind of deep down clean that keeps your skin blemish free. It's rumored to be an amazing exfoliator that brightens the skin and leaves it smooth and amazingly soft. We also heard that it also heals existing blemishes quickly and keeps the blemish from coming back. Word. You know we like the sounds of that.

Turns out people are mashing up anywhere from 3-10 aspirin depending on oiliness or level of breakout, adding water or Cetaphil to create a paste and viola. We have also read that you can add yogurt as an exfoliating astringent, and/or honey and Aloe gel to make the mask more moisturizing. There seems to be countless ways to customize it.

Everyone’s skin is different and we are not estheticians, so of course, proceed with caution. If you are allergic to aspirin, or have sensitive skin, this might not be for you. However, bloggers all over the world are raving about it, so we’ve rounded up a few tried and true recipes. If you decide to whip up a batch and give it a go, please, come back an tell us all about it.

THE BASIC:
Step 1: Take 6 uncoated aspirin and break each into halves. Put in a small cup or a lid.

Step 2: Add 3-4 drops of warm/hot water, and use a stick to smush the aspirin around. If it's too dry and doesn't dissolve, add 1 drop of water at a time until it forms into a thick white paste.

Step 3: Spread thickly onto your face. Leave for 10-15 minutes. You'll know it's ready when bits of white powder start falling off your face.

STEP 4: As you wash it off with warm water, gently massage it into your skin. You'll feel your skin to be very smooth and even.

STEP 5: Pat face gently dry. You should be feeling radiant and soft!

YOGURT & HONEY VERSION:
5-6 lightly coated (or uncoated) aspirin
plain organic yogurt
organic honey

STEP 1: Mix a dollop of honey into a few tablespoons of yogurt.

STEP 2: Grind aspirin in a grinder or smash it into a powder with the back of a spoon. If you're using uncoated aspirin, there's no need to grind. just drop the aspirin into the yogurt and wait for them to dissolve.

STEP 3: In a small bowl, mix enough of the yogurt/honey mixture into the aspirin powder to make a paste that will adhere to your skin, about the consistency of cold cream.

STEP 4: Apply to face, leave on about 10-20 minutes.

CETAPHIL & ALOE VERSION:
Step 1: Mash 6-8 uncoated, regular strength aspirin
Step 2: Add a few squirts of Cetaphil or Aloe Vera Gel
Step 3: Mix until paste like consistency.

Routine:
1. Cleanse skin with normal cleanser.
2. Steam skin with a really warm cloth.
3. Apply mask for about 15-20 mins.
3. Rinse and using the aspirin bits as a scrub. Massage gently.
4. Use a light moisturizer if you have oily skin. A heavier one if you have dry skin.

I say this as a person who studied medical pharmacology: aspirin (ACETYL salicylic acid) is not that great it has a lot of side effects and it can counteract with other drugs if taken systemically (orally) which upsets the stomach... Now I say this as a person who studied cosmetics: salicylic acid has wondrous local effects, but highly an allergen!! Thats why the dont sell aspirin (Acetyl SA) as a local cream, but go to any cosmetic line and one of the main active ingredients found in those products is salicylic acid!! So its only missing the acetyl group!! Ladies, do a spot test first check that youre not allergic then enjoy~!

Well I tried the mask and it cleared up a whole load of hormonal and allergic reaction spots that were spreading faster than wild fire! I love it but only use about 3/4 aspirins at a time (and only once a fortnight). I do think people using 10 at a time might be pushing safety boundaries possibly. Other than that I think as long as you don't sniff it, you should be ok. However I have found better, lasting effects from using an aspirin toner (50ml witch hazel with 4 apirins crushed up finely). I used witch hazel for a while and it is good but not fast acting - with the aspirin its ace! I have clear skin now, which is a miracle - I have been battling hormonal acne for a LONG time. Not even topical lotions prescribed by the Dr. or contraceptive pill worked this well - or fast. My husband even asked me to make him some to use....now that IS a miracle. P.S We most certainly do have apsirin in the UK!!

I might suggest to use this sparingly...when you wash it off, all that medication has to go somewhere! Our water is getting loaded down with medications which are severely disrupting ecosystems. Secondly, everything we put on our skin is absorbed (think about all the chemicals from products we use building up in our bodies!)-- aspirin acts as a blood thinner and one should be careful not to mix it with certain medications (ie warfarin, etc...). A natural alternative could be willow bark which is also salicylate-rich and is available at any health food store in capsule form. Let's be responsible and perhaps instead of using it as a mask, maybe just use it when and where needed. And for those of you who were chatting up hemorrhoid cream for under eyes...if that creeps you out try Traumeel (also at health food stores) which is a potent antiinflammatory that absorbs completely, VERY safe (even on babies!), and has no smell. Works wonders! Try it also on any injury to heal faster.

Uh, for all you geniuses who don't think this is something that should go on your face, what do you think is in Clearasil and similar products? Salicylic acid. Same thing. May dry you out like acne meds because it's the same.

I tried it last night, and the results were as good as, if not better than the results I get with commercial scrubs. I would compare it to St. Ives Apricot Scrub, except the aspirin mask smells terrible! Be sure not to get it in your eyes! Amy @ http://prettybabies.blogspot.com (By the way, I laughed about England not having aspirin... :) )

Please realize that aspirin in a medicine that can be absorbed through the skin. So if you are allergic to it, I don't think you should be applying it to your skin. I've tried the mask, and it made me break out HORRIBILY. Though it may be a godsend to some, it is horrible for others. Do try a spot test before you put it ALL over your face.

i read about using crushed asprin on blemishes a long time ago as a make-up artist's 'tip' in a magazine and have used it (asprin + water 'paste') ever since. it's most effective at night when you're in bed - the blemish and redness are visibly reduced. never thought about using it as a full-facial mask, but i guess now i can!

I'm not a DIY beauty person, but I tried this on a whim over 10 years ago after seeing raves on a beauty board. It is brilliant, and is the single best treatment I give my skin. I do it once a month or so, and I use a really potent moisurizer right after. It makes my skin soft, glowy, baby-smooth. I can't recommend it highly enough. Try going on Makeup Alley (www.makeupalley.com) and search for reviews of Aspirin Mask. Hundreds of people have raved about the benefits there, for several years.

I've been doing this mask for over a year and I have to admit no other mask has given me the same results. It has even made my acne scars improve like nothing else. And it does make your skin super smooth. It's so cheap too!!

Sounds to me like it should be in the same category as putting hemorrhoid cream on as an eye cream. Makes me wonder.

huh? makes you wonder what? My roommate actually swears by the hemorrhoid cream when you have puffy eyes. I mean the active ingredient is meant to reduce swelling - it makes sense. That said, I think the aspirin mask makes sense too. I could see it having active ingredients that would be very effective. Thanks for the tip! You guys rock.

I love this mask. I've used it on and off for over a year now. I use it a lot when my skin is congested and lacking luster. I buy the cheapest aspirin you can find, usually the dollar store brand. I get a few hundred for a single buck. I keep the bottle and a ramekin in my bathroom cabinet. When I look like I need a pick me up or have a few bumps that need special treatment I pour some into the ramekin with a few drops of hot water, let them dissolve then spread it on. I let it sit until it is dry, I use a warm wash cloth to remove it then moisturize as usual. I love that it is gentle enough to use a few times a week and doesn't dry me out completely like clay based masks can. I've used it with warm milk or vitamin e oil and can't find an issue with it at all. I think it is wonderful and versatile mask

I've never heard of this before but it totally makes sense. I am not one for do it yourself mix-it-ups, but this one seems easy and effective. I am tempted to try the yogurt / honey one.

Well I have to say: I am pretty impressed. Normally my routine involves using baking soda and water as an exfoliant (which, by the way, works great and leaves the skin mucho soft)but this mask is pretty rockin. First I wiped my face with a cotton pad dipped in rose water, then I used 5 crushed aspirins and aloe vera gel(the organic kind) as the paste and it did a great job. I sat in front of a fan to make it dry faster, then scrubbed and rinsed it off and was pleasantly surprised. I moisturized with some more aloe on a cotton ball then used a little emu oil. As I will be moving to England at the end of the month, I will be sure to bring lots of aspirin! Thanks for the head's up!

I use it often...works amazingly well. Just don't add too much honey. I also add a few drops of Vitamin E oil.
