Get the Look: Hilary Duff's Reach Out Video

For the past few years, Hilary Duff has had the formidable task of breaking free from the squeaky clean expectations that come with being a former Disney star. By most accounts, she’s managed to do this rather gracefully, inching into maturity and the world of the slightly risqué with considerable class.
Going along for the ride has been makeup artist Rachel Goodwin, who’s been responsible for many of Duff’s all-grown-up looks, including the latest for her new video “Reach Out.” The song is an updated dance version of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus,” and the look is a sexy, more daring departure for Duff. “The thing I love about Hilary is that she never pushes it too far, she never cheapens herself. In this video she’s exploring her other side, discovering herself,” says Rachel.
Rachel created a few looks to go with the “raw, hand-held camera, Terry Richardson vibe” that director Philip Andelman was going for. Here’s what she told WLB about her three favorites:
The Cherry Red Lip Gold-Eye Look —“This look was slightly Jerry Hall and very late 70s/early 80s,” says Rachel, who says the key to this high-glamour look is the striking red lip gloss that plays nicely with the bronzy “hyper orange” palette.
Get the look: The see-through red lip gloss is “Scandal” by NARS, and Rachel suggests applying lip liner to the entire lip to make it last longer. “High gloss like that is super-high maintenance because it’s hard to keep it on, but it’s also a low commitment, fun look.”
The Deep Red Lip Purple-Eye Look —“Hilary really loved this look. The iridescent purple lips are very in your face.” Rachel was going for maximum impact here to create “underground, club makeup.”
Get the look: Rachel says the best way to pull off this dramatic lip is to do it with a clean face to avoid an overdone look. Like Hilary, you’ll want to “keep it beautiful with a hard edge.”
The Nude Lip Purple-Eye look — “This ringmaster look was just fun and playful. The purple eyes are the focal point, and the vibe was just very pop art and playing with color.”
Get the look: Rachel created the bold eyes with lots of liquid liner, which is winged on the outside, and iridescent purple eyeshadow. “I used a silvery purple color and focused on the inside of the eye to create a nice shape and a graphic look.”
