Behind the Scenes: Teresa Palmer at Allure Magazine Shoot
Teresa Palmer, the hot new natural beauty from South Australia, was chosen for this month’s Allure’s Face feature. Teresa is Danielle Radcliff’s (Harry Potter) co-star in the upcoming ‘December Boys’. Our boys Spencer Barnes and Adir Abergel were the dynamic duo on assignment to give the young Aussie an updated twist on some old Hollywood glamour.
THE MAKEUP:
For Spencer the look was all about the eyes. He wanted to give her eyes a “stylized edge,” that would evoke “retro-glamour” by elongating her eyes with “dramatic lashes to extend them outward,” and by, “getting the brow shape just right.” Here’s how he did just that:
BROWS:
Spencer used Anastasia’s Brow Express Kit to shape Teresa’s brows. Using the angled brow brush and the brow powder duo in Golden Blonde, he brushed them into place, defined them. The shape of the brows was a key element to the look. Instead of giving her the typical modern arch, he kept the beginning of the brow straight and long, moving into a very subtle arch and then softly tapering at the end.
*Insider Tip:
Use a shade lighter than your actual brow color. This will give the illusion of the brow being filled in, but the focus will be on your actual brow, making the look more natural.
Using a concealer that matched her skin tone exactly, Spencer used a flat brush and applied concealer around the brow shape to make it especially clean and defined.
EYES:
Spencer started with Lancome Aquatique Waterproof EyeColour Base, a creamy nude with no added sheer, so the look would be matte. He smudged a coffee brown eyeliner into her lashline with the warmth of his finger and then tapped powder on it to set it. He dotted a deeper brown liner along the outer third of her eye close to the lash line and brought it out to the edge. Using powder on the bottom of her eyes, he blended it out along the lashline out to meet the edge.
*Insider Tip:
Spencer used a white pencil on the inner eye to keep her eyes open. His favorite is Lancome’s Le Crayon KHÔL Liner in Blanc because unlike others it doesn’t move.
LASHES:
He curled her lashes with the shu uemura Eyelash Curler and gave her a good coat of Maybeline Great Lash Waterproof mascara. Very tightly along the upper lashline, he placed them one at a time with a pair of angled tweezers, small and medium, black individual flare lashes in black from Ardell. He patterned them one short at the very edge, then 3-4 mediums, then 2 shorts and mediums again, keeping the lashes at the very edges of her eyes. He made sure to use the knot-free lashes that they could be applied flat against the lashline. Once all of the lashes were placed and dried, he added a second coat of mascara to bring all the lashes together.
Quick Tip: To enhance your entire lashline without the hassle of applying individuals, Spencer suggests getting the full set of lashes, Ardell Lash #102, and cutting off the outer 3 long pieces. With a little glue place the remaining piece at the outer edge of your eye for just the right amount of flair.
THE HAIR:
To give Teresa the retro glam look with the modern twist, Adir kept her hair high on the crown of her head in a sort of 50’s style, but kept it very loose to give it that sexy undone appeal.
Adir started by spraying Kusco-Murphy Setting Lotion onto her wet hair to saturate the roots and create texture. He chose the multi-purpose setting lotion because it also acts as a volumizer and adds shine.
Using a blow dryer he dried Teresa’s hair flipped upside down to create volume. He then sprayed Frederick Fekkai Sheer Hold Hair Spray all over her hair. Using a large, 1.5” barrel curling iron, he pin curled her entire head and waited until the hair cooled before taking the pin curls down (out). To finish off the look Adir backcombed her hair and pulled it into a loose French twist. He did NOT use any finishing product because he wanted her hair to have that undone textured style.
The boys paid attention to every detail, noting that even the manicurist, April Foreman, gave Teresa’s nails a round shape to beckon the old Hollywood feeling. We love all the attention to detail and can’t wait to see Teresa in action. Good on ya boys!
