Beauty Myth Busted: Shrink Your Pores

Beauty Myth: Shrinking Pores

We all know that having undetectable pores is the secret to flawless skin. There are hundreds of products on the market that promise to minimize pores, but is it possible to actually shrink the size of your pores? The unfortunate answer is no.

If you are like me, pores are a constant concern. I have an oily complexion. I’m told I should be thankful, because in the long run I’ll look younger than those with dry skin. I’ll keep that in mind, but having oily or combination skin is a lot of work.

Pore size is genetically determined. They do not shrink, but to make matters worse, they can get bigger. Clogged pores can get stretched if the plug of sebum, debris, or other gross stuff is not cleaned out. The other obvious concern is the growth of bacteria in pores resulting a delightful array of acne problems.

While it’s impossible to shrink your pores, keeping your skin clean is the best way to visibly reduce their apprearance. Cleansing products with salicylic acids, AHA & BHA, and anti-agers such as Retin-A can help keep your pores clear. In the cosmetic world, there are many silicone-based primers that do an amazing job at diffusing and “filling in” fine lines and large pores.

My personal favorite defense in the war on pores is Kate’s Somerville’s Kate in a Jar. This enzyme exfoliator is completely addictive. I use it religiously (more than I probably should). The enzymes get deep into my pores and eat the gunk away. Look for our official review of this miracle product in the WE LOVE section. Good luck and stay clear.
